Listing fields and requirements

Which fields each marketplace demands, and what Reskale fills in for you.

Reskale checks a listing against the destination's rules before submitting it. That is why you sometimes get red fields instead of a queued job — it is cheaper to be told now than to have sixty jobs fail one at a time.

This page is the reference for what each marketplace demands.

Required everywhere

No marketplace will accept a listing without these:

  • At least one photo
  • A description
  • A price greater than zero
  • A category

Quantity defaults to 1 and only errors if you explicitly set it below 1.

Discogs is not in this table because it works differently — a listing is a release from the Discogs catalogue plus a condition grade and a price, not a free-form item. See Discogs.

Notes that matter in practice

Titles. 80 characters is the binding constraint. Write to that and nothing truncates. Vinted allows 100, and Depop generates its own title from the item's attributes, so anything you write there is ignored.

Descriptions. 1,000 characters is the real ceiling if you sell on Mercari or Depop. eBay's limit is effectively unreachable. A long eBay description will be cut for the others, so put the important detail — measurements, flaws — first.

Brand. Required on Mercari and Depop. Neither wants it blank:

  • On Mercari, set "No Brand / Not Sure" on the item if it is unbranded.
  • On Depop, use its own "No Brand" entry.

Vinted defaults to "No brand", which is why it is not listed as required there even though the field exists.

Condition. Required on eBay, Mercari and Vinted. Reskale maps your item's condition onto each marketplace's own wording — they all use different words for the same thing. Check the mapped result the first time; the map errs conservative rather than flattering.

Shipping profile. Mercari and Depop require account-level shipping settings before any listing can be created. This is not per-item — set it once:

  • Mercari needs a ZIP code, who pays, and a delivery method.
  • Depop needs country, city, address, provider and parcel size.

Set these up at shipping profiles. Until they exist, every Mercari or Depop crosspost is blocked with the same message, which is a confusing thing to hit in the middle of a bulk run.

Size. Not universally gated, because it is category-dependent everywhere. Depop expanded well past clothing — art, homeware, books, electronics — and those categories have no size control at all. The marketplace's own form still blocks apparel without a size, so add one for anything wearable.

eBay item specifics. eBay requires different attributes per leaf category — Department, Type, Style, and so on. These are not in the table because they change by category. Reskale resolves them from eBay's own taxonomy at crosspost time and can fill many automatically. See eBay.

Reading a validation error

Errors name the field and say what is wrong:

  • Required — the field is empty and the marketplace will not accept that.
  • Too long — over that marketplace's character limit.
  • Invalid — present but not an acceptable value, for example a quantity below 1.

All checks run at once, so you see every problem in one pass rather than fixing them one at a time.

Fix it on the item, not the job

A missing size added to the item is there for every future crosspost of it. The same fix made only in a marketplace panel has to be made again next time.

The exceptions are genuinely marketplace-specific values — a per-marketplace price, or a category that only exists on one of them. Those belong in the panel.
